The place you post your work and the place you buy your assets are now the same company

On 10 August, KitBash acquired ArtStation and Sketchfab from Epic Games.

If the name throws you, it threw me too. KitBash is the parent company. KitBash3D is one of its brands, and Greyscalegorilla is another. Those two merged back in September 2025, with the KitBash3D founders as co-CEOs and Nick Campbell, who started Greyscalegorilla in 2009, moving into a chief innovation officer role. That merged company is what just bought the two biggest places artists put their work online.

So the tally is now KitBash3D, Greyscalegorilla, Cargo, ArtStation and Sketchfab under one roof. Nothing changes today. Portfolios, libraries and logins keep working as they did, and that is what everyone involved has said publicly.

Here is the part I find interesting. Until this month, the place you showcase your work and the place you buy your models were separate businesses with separate incentives. Now they are one. That is not automatically bad. There is an obvious version of this that is genuinely good for artists, where your portfolio, your asset library and your store all speak to each other instead of living in five tabs.

There is also an obvious version that is worse, and everyone reading this has seen a platform get quieter after it got absorbed. Which one it turns out to be is a question of what they build next, not of what they announced.

The other half of the story is Epic stepping back from running artist community platforms at all. That says something too.
